LEBANON – Recently, the Staff Council at Volunteer Starte Community College held an interdepartmental food drive to benefit the food pantry at Mid-Cumberland Community Action Agency- Sumner County’s low-income families.
Every year, the council undertakes some type
of community service project to benefit the
Sumner County Community, according to Penny
Tucker, Volunteer State Community College
Staff Council member. “This year we looked
at the economy and unemployment rates, and
decided that a food drive was the thing to
do” said Tucker. In a clever move, the
council billed the food drive as an
interdepartmental competition; the
department that collected the most food
would be treated to a free pizza lunch. As a
result, nearly 2000 pounds of food were
collected!
MCCAA is ecstatic to the recipient of such a
generous donation. “We are so thankful to
have received this food” said Ruby Buntin,
Community Service Associate for MCCAA-Sumner
County. “We know that because of the
generosity and hard work of the Vol. State
Staff Council, more people in Sumner County
will have food to eat”
The MCCAA-Sumner County feeds several
hundred Sumner county families every year.
The pantry which operates solely on
donations, is often the last chance for food
for families who don’t qualify for food
stamps, or the food stamps have run out.
“Sometimes the pantry starts getting bare,
but always in the nick of time, something
wonderful like the Vol. State project will
happen, and we have the opportunity to
replenish it” said Buntin.
The MCCAA-Sumner County food pantry is
available to any Sumner County resident in
need of food. Anyone interested in donating
to the food pantry should contact the MCCAA
office at 615-452-7570.
MCCAA also provides a number of self-sufficiency, medical support,
rental, mortgage, transportation, and nutritional services to Middle
Tennessee families. In addition to Income Tax Preparation, Agency
programs include Head Start and Early Head Start and the Retired Senior
Volunteer Program. The agency services eight Mid-State counties, which
