MCCAA Helps Mount Juliet Mother Become Self-Sufficient

LEBANON -By helping Stacy Odom of Mount Juliet purchase a reliable automobile, Mid-Cumberland Community Action Agency is enabling another Middle Tennessee family to become self-sufficient.

“MCCAA programs are designed to give those in need the tools and resources they need to become productive members of society,” said Kreda Yokley, the non-profit agency’s executive director.

“Our Transportation Down-Payment Assistance Program helps our clients buy a reliable vehicle to get to and from work. They save up money for a down payment, and then the agency contributes toward the purchase of the vehicle.”

Since 1971, MCCAA has provided a number of home energy assistance, medical support, transportation, rental, mortgage and utility assistance, and nutritional services to Middle Tennessee families. Agency programs include Head Start and Early Head Start, Self-Sufficiency and Income Tax Preparation. The agency services eight Mid-State counties, which include Cannon, Cheatham, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson and Wilson.

“This has been a blessing for me,” said Odom, a mother of two who works for the agency’s commodity-food program. “I originally came here hoping to get help with my electric bill and to also see if they could help me find a job.

“Being without a car was really tough on me and my family. But they worked with me and helped me buy a good car. This agency has been a godsend to me.

“The people I’ve encountered here have been really sweet. They actually care about you and do all they can to help.”
