Williamson MCCAA Office In Need Of Food-Storage Space

FRANKLIN – Mid-Cumberland Community Action Agency provides free food to 400 eligible households in Williamson County, but the nonprofit organization is in need of storage space for the food it collects throughout the year.

MCCAA works in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Tennessee Emergency Food Assistance Program to distribute non-perishable food items to senior citizens and others who need assistance.

“We just don’t have space in our office on West Fowlkes Street to store all that food,” explained Kreda Yokley, the agency’s executive director. “The county had been allowing us to store the food at a site it owned, but that location is under renovation.

“So we are in sort of a bind on what to do. Our agency would really appreciate any help we could get with this situation.”

Since 1971, MCCAA has provided a number of home energy assistance, medical support, transportation, rental, mortgage and utility assistance, and nutritional services to Middle Tennessee families. Agency programs include Head Start and Early Head Start, Self-Sufficiency and Income Tax Preparation. The agency services eight Mid-State counties, which include Cannon, Cheatham, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson and Wilson.

The agency accepts applications for its commodity food program throughout the entire year and distributes food each quarter. Eligible seniors and other families in need can also participate in the agency’s Nutrition Education Program, which, among other things, teaches proper nutrition. MCCAA’s Garden Program also teaches people how to grow gardens and reduce grocery expenses.

MCCAA officials request anyone interested in allowing the agency to store food items in a suitable location to contact them at 615-790-5786 or 5789. The Williamson MCCAA office is located in Suite 136 of the Community Services Building at 129 West Fowlkes Street in Franklin.
